My review of Newport Judo Club
Hi, my name is Barbara. I've trained for many years at the Newport Club, and also previously at Richard's previous club, Moonee Valley Judo Club. I gained my Black Belt (First Dan), in 2012. I really enjoy training at Newport for quite a few reasons, but the main ones are are the relaxed family atmosphere combined with the traditions of Judo itself. Jigaro Kano, the great man who put Judo together, was a progressive and creative man. This is still very evident in Judo today. The general standard of Martial Arts in Australia is very high and safely conducted, but this is particularly true of Judo. Judo has also always welcomed women and children, both overseas and here in Australia. If you train at the Newport Judo, it does not matter if you are training mainly to keep fit or as a serious competitor. You will be catered for. Also, if you are female, there are a number of girls and women training at the moment. Judo also has a long and interesting history and is quite artistic. Come along and find out while getting fit!

    Connection and community
Newport Judo Club and the Head teacher Richard Roper are more than just Judo , Self defence and fitness. Judo teaches principles that are life changing. Richard is knows judo and also brings to life priciples of awareness of what is around you, exporing possibilities and options ( for example, using your voice to create safety and avoid phsysical risk) and understanding that one has to make choices and commit - A judo student learns many throws and techniques bringing choice but execution requires commitment and follow through. Newport judo and Richard have given my family a gift not just of judo and fitness but lessons in the 'judo way' that are a gem for life and business. New to judo & was worried, but Newport Judo Club is great!
I'm completely new to judo and martial arts in general, and before I started doing judo at Newport Judo Club my physical health was fairly poor, so I was nervous, thinking that after my first session I was going to walk away bruised and never wanting to get on the judo mat ever again! I needn't have worried at all - Richard and the club at Newport are a welcoming, diverse bunch and you soon feel part of the team. There is lots to be learned about Japanese judo and its traditions, but Richard is great at laying it out in a way that isn't too overwhelming, whilst giving you the tools to learn productively and be respectful to the traditions. You might be interested in judo from a self-defense standpoint. I certainly am - particularly as a young woman! - Richard has some great anecdotes and has often come over and shown me useful techniques where it's relevant. There is definitely a lot to learn, and Newport Judo Club has a range of people with different belts and in my experience everyone has something useful to teach me, and it's great that Richard encourages that kind of friendly environment. I'm (obviously) part of the Seniors class but I've shown up early for the Juniors by accident a few times, and the kids look like they're having a blast too so that's great!
Answer from Newport Judo Club on 01-12-2016:
Thanks It has been a great privilege to watch you grow in confidence and skill.
  • What makes Judo so unique?
    What makes Judo so unique?

The first thing you learn in practically all Asian Martial Arts is how to bow - something that is foreign to most other activities in western life. Why is this important? Read this article to find out!
