Best Life Decision i Have Made

    11-05-2015 by Westie

I have been training with Wilkes since 2012, I turn 41 this year and I dont remember feeling as fit, sharp, confident and balanced in a long time. The atmosphere/vibe created within the gym is a sanctuary from pressures of the outside world, the instructors are dedicated and passionate about their art and the progression of all students be it the 3yr olds through to the "older" people like myself. Egos are left at the door and everyone is in there to assist and bring the best out in everyone else regardless of experience and rank. Anyone thinking of signing their child or children up, I could not recommend Wilkes more highly, the quality and substance in the kids classes are not just self-defence and fitness but crucial life skills including respect, courtesy, integrity and dedication. All in all a fantastic environment to train in, a fantastic group of people, quite possible one of the best decisions I have made was walking through the door and getting started.

Not just for the serious athletes.

    08-05-2015 by Gaz

I joined Wilkes Academy in 2013 after realising that 25 years of trying every fad diet available had left me a middle aged very overweight man susceptible to diabetes and a shortened life expectancy. My wife and daughter had already joined and I had been along to watch a few times, never even daring to think I could do what they were doing. I was asked a few times by Mr Mitchell if I'd like to join in, but I managed to find an excuse every time. Eventually I plucked up the courage to have a crack at it, fully expecting to feel humiliated. What I discovered was a family of instructors and students who are absolutely dedicated to helping people set a goal and realise it, to get fit and have a laugh at the same time, and to learn a skill that both gives you focus away from life's worries and in the unfortunate event that you need to rely on it, would give you a good chance of defending and protecting yourself in a controlled way. Eighteen months later, I am 16kg lighter, fitter, happier, healthier and the proud wearer of a blue belt. I had no confidence that I would last a month when I signed up, but now I can't imagine not having this aim, and these friends, in my life. My ten year old daughter has her education and attitude assessed prior to every grading and this has proved to be very effective in making her want to 'do the right thing' as well as giving her the ability to defend herself also. We pay a very reasonable weekly membership fee and can attend as many classes as we wish. This is not only martial arts classes, but also general fitness classes. Wilkes Academy has changed lots of things about me, but most importantly it has given me a life that I previously thought was out of my reach. Needless to say, I would recommend them to not only the serious athletes, of which there are many in the Academy, but also to the people like me that need the guidance to change their lifestyle and lose weight and get fit.

    Great dance school, awesome teacher.

    28-11-2016 by Ange

My girls have been coming to Hughes Dance School for 5 years now, my youngest was just 3 when she started. They both love coming to this dance school, and especially love Miss Shelby. She is great with the kids, they all have fun and enjoy it but like all schools, they are expected to behave, listen and follow instructions. My girls have tried all the genres that Miss Shelby teaches and they are keen to continue with all of them!! What I love about this dance school is that it's not as full on as some are, but it's still extremely professional in how it's all run, taught and managed. The end of year concert is fantastic!

Answer from Hughes Dance Co - COMO & APPLECROSS on 29-11-2016:
Thank you for your comment. Shelby loves teaching and has a wonderful re pour with all the students. She is very professional and produces some extremely talented students.

    Absolutely disgusted, stay away!!

    29-04-2016 by Trish

I enrolled my daughters in Hughes "dance school" and the instructor Shelby was very rude! Within 10 minutes she'd made my kids cry (it was the youngest one's birthday too), was very unfriendly and rude, and not encouraging at all. Definitely in the wrong career. I've seen many dance schools and this one is the absolute worst!

Answer from Hughes Dance Co - COMO & APPLECROSS on 28-11-2016:
I have already responded to Trish for her unfair comments and won't waste my time here. I have many very happy and content children and parents who have been with us for many years so I suggest you come and have a look for yourself before you take a negative comment as gospel. thank you Swanna

Dear unsatisfied audience member IMO, I am the Drama teacher at this facility and I am very sorry to hear your negative comments after you watched the end of year performance of The Snow Queen. The subject that you have enclosed was never discussed with the children in the way in which you describe, and the students were focused on their voice projection and stage skills and had no focus on the underlying storyline in which you have read into. The story was chosen because it is a fairytale and like most fairy tales you have ever watched, they focus on love, friendship, and include your typical stock characters and archetypes. In this performance the students were allowed to improvise the ending and I guided them towards adding their own flair to the show. I am very sorry you feel negaitvely about this, in fact, the fact that students felt confident enough up on the stage and to perform in front of an audience is a bigger achievement to our club than fancy costumes or makeup. I was proud of every single student up there on that stage and will continue to this philosophy of teaching in 2014. We hope to see you at our next production.

Subject matter a poor choice IMO

I attended The Snow Queen last weekend. I was appalled to note that body image issues, fat/thin/ugly ran through the play; unresolved, along with unrequited love(eventually requited). I also noted that Kai left Girda to go with the Snow Queen, but then went back to Girda, and the snow queen decided to marry someone because he was the best looking. Of all possible subject matter, this was deemed appropriate? Surely kids theatre (involving under 10's especially) SHOULD involve costumes, stage make up, being taught how to project your voice, helping to make sets? Isnt that a huge part of it? Sorry to be negative, but what an opportunity lost...
