    Upwey Tae Kwon Do

    14-06-2017 by Saul

I train at Upwey Rhee TKD side by side with my 9 yo son. There's not a lot of sports where you can do this which is one of the things we both love about it - however it doesn't stop there. The people we train with are great, the instructors are great all combined with some excellent messaging about self control and respect. We're only just getting established in our training routine, however I already notice some great physical and mental benefits. One of the aims of the training is to get your brain and body working in sync with each other - it amazes me how much of a challenge this actually is - but I think I'm getting there. In conclusion, I can't recommend it highly enough and hopefully my son and I will both be training there for many years to come.

Answer from Upwey Tae Kwon Do and Self Defence on 16-06-2017:
It is always pleasing to know that students are "getting it" and seeing the benefits, both for them as individuals but also as a family.

Great activity for kids and adults

    09-02-2016 by Jess Brown

Tae kwon Do helps people to develop flexibility, strength and coordination in a fun, low-pressure way. Upwey Tae Kwon Do teachers are knowledgeable and patient. Well-worth the experience for kids and adults alike.

Answer from Upwey Tae Kwon Do and Self Defence on 19-05-2016:
Besides the physical benefits of exercise, by training together often as a family, both children and adults learn that respect is a two-way street. This reinforces respect all round and boosts self confidence as the usual power hierarchy between adults and children is not relevant in our martial art.

Upwey Tae Kwon Do and Self Defense

    08-02-2016 by Faith Nicholls

This has been the best activity my son has ever been involved with. Excellent mentoring and teaching . My son developed great confidence in himself as well as learning new skills.

Answer from Upwey Tae Kwon Do and Self Defence on 19-05-2016:
Self confidence in children, especially teenagers, will help them to resist negative peer pressure and thus make them safer. Regular training in a safe non-competitive environment will boost their confidence as they learn. This is compared to a competitive environment which disadvantages those who cannot keep up with others, often resulting in a lowering of self confidence.

How to help your kid find their balance in life

Pretty soon, our ‘life triangle’ is all out of shape - just like our bodies. We all too often become aware of this imbalance when it appears to be too late, and start to bounce around looking to regain some balance. Joining the gym has become a fad and is worth a try until we realise that we are paying more and going less. Self motivation is probably to be found within the shortened ‘mental’ side of our triangle. Short courses may help to improve our mental and/or spiritu...

Self defence for kids - recognising danger

Teaching our children (and ourselves) to recognise what is “normal” in our homes, schools, and local community can make it a lot easier to spot incongruities that may signal a potential danger or dangerous situation.   Dangerous situations that your child or teenager could be more aware of include: - A darkened area that is normally lit.  - Door locks not in their expected state. Perhaps the storeroom door is normally locked but you notice it is unlocked. - S...

How to raise brave kids - that understand FEAR

Adrenalin (epinephrine) is a natural body chemical that causes our muscles to perform quicker resulting in more strength and a faster response. Associated with this adrenal dump is a release of dopamine to act as a natural pain killer. All this results in reactions like shaky knees or butterflies in the stomach and a strong feeling that you want to be somewhere else. All of which is simply interpreted as fear. This is quite natural and can result whenever placed under stress, from being required...

My review of Newport Judo Club

    08-09-2015 by Barbara Robinson

Hi, my name is Barbara. I've trained for many years at the Newport Club, and also previously at Richard's previous club, Moonee Valley Judo Club. I gained my Black Belt (First Dan), in 2012. I really enjoy training at Newport for quite a few reasons, but the main ones are are the relaxed family atmosphere combined with the traditions of Judo itself. Jigaro Kano, the great man who put Judo together, was a progressive and creative man. This is still very evident in Judo today. The general standard of Martial Arts in Australia is very high and safely conducted, but this is particularly true of Judo. Judo has also always welcomed women and children, both overseas and here in Australia. If you train at the Newport Judo, it does not matter if you are training mainly to keep fit or as a serious competitor. You will be catered for. Also, if you are female, there are a number of girls and women training at the moment. Judo also has a long and interesting history and is quite artistic. Come along and find out while getting fit!

Answer from Newport Judo Club on 01-12-2016:
Thanks Barb, Your dedication and commitment has made you and excellent Judoka

    Connection and community

02-09-2015 by Fitness with a purpose

Newport Judo Club and the Head teacher Richard Roper are more than just Judo , Self defence and fitness. Judo teaches principles that are life changing. Richard is knows judo and also brings to life priciples of awareness of what is around you, exporing possibilities and options ( for example, using your voice to create safety and avoid phsysical risk) and understanding that one has to make choices and commit - A judo student learns many throws and techniques bringing choice but execution requires commitment and follow through. Newport judo and Richard have given my family a gift not just of judo and fitness but lessons in the 'judo way' that are a gem for life and business. New to judo & was worried, but Newport Judo Club is great!

    01-09-2015 by Shannon

I'm completely new to judo and martial arts in general, and before I started doing judo at Newport Judo Club my physical health was fairly poor, so I was nervous, thinking that after my first session I was going to walk away bruised and never wanting to get on the judo mat ever again! I needn't have worried at all - Richard and the club at Newport are a welcoming, diverse bunch and you soon feel part of the team. There is lots to be learned about Japanese judo and its traditions, but Richard is great at laying it out in a way that isn't too overwhelming, whilst giving you the tools to learn productively and be respectful to the traditions. You might be interested in judo from a self-defense standpoint. I certainly am - particularly as a young woman! - Richard has some great anecdotes and has often come over and shown me useful techniques where it's relevant. There is definitely a lot to learn, and Newport Judo Club has a range of people with different belts and in my experience everyone has something useful to teach me, and it's great that Richard encourages that kind of friendly environment. I'm (obviously) part of the Seniors class but I've shown up early for the Juniors by accident a few times, and the kids look like they're having a blast too so that's great!

Answer from Newport Judo Club on 01-12-2016:
Thanks It has been a great privilege to watch you grow in confidence and skill.

    What makes Judo so unique?

In most forms of Martial Arts the second things you are taught is how to kick, punch or grapple. But in Judo the second thing you learn is how to fall and how to get up from that fall. Knowing how to fall is an extremely valuable asset in life. If you know how to fall, not only do you know how to get up from being thrown on the mat but you need never be concerned about falling in your every day life. I don't know if you can imagine the difference it makes to your willingness to tackle man...
